What it does
Five executive orders that reset U.S. nuclear policy and aim to roughly quadruple capacity — from ~100 GW today to ~400 GW by 2050. They direct reactors for military bases and AI data centers (EO 14299); fixed NRC licensing deadlines and a wholesale rewrite of its rules (EO 14300); DOE-led advanced-reactor testing with three pilot reactors to criticality by July 4, 2026 (EO 14301); reinvigorating the industrial base toward 10 large reactors under construction by 2030 (EO 14302); and AI for nuclear science via the Genesis Mission (EO 14363).
Why it matters
Far from symbolic. These orders are the catalyst behind a wave of coordinated action across the Department of Energy, the NRC, the Department of War, and the national labs — the Reactor Pilot Program, the Nuclear Energy Launch Pad, sweeping new NRC rulemakings, military microreactors, and AI-accelerated reactor design. Much of the momentum the sector is seeing in 2025–2026 traces back here, alongside the ADVANCE Act. They remain executive directives, not law — which is exactly why Congress is moving to codify them.
